Parenting Style

People often want to know as to how other parents bring up their child carefully and properly. They want all the information about the strategies and methods other parents use in bringing up their child. This strategies and methods that parents use or adopt during the growth of the child are called as parenting style. Amongst all the theories developed regarding parenting style the best theory developed till date was of Diana Baum rind. She classified this parenting style into four types namely authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and neglectful.

Let us see this four types in detail along with its nooks i.e. their pros and corns.

Authoritative parenting style: in this parenting style the parents give independence to their child but with most of the authority in their hands. The rules and the limits that is the bench mark are set by the parents and the child has to follow it. Authoritative parents allow the child to do what he wants but within the limits set by the parents. The power of decision making lies in the hands of parents. Authoritative parents forgive the child instead of punishing him if a child makes a mistake. They do punish the children but along with the explanation as to what went wrong. This method allows the child to be self status and self esteemed. Children grown with this style are loved by everyone. This is the highly used style of parenting.

Authoritarian parenting style: this style is not widely used as there is a fear of children being spoilt. In this style the complete authority lies in the hands of parents and children are not given any independence. In this style parents expect much from their child but do not state the limits and the rules and the regulations. In this case if a child commits a mistake the result is biting and nothing is explained to the child as to why this biting was. The parents who undertake this style for bringing up their children is not good. The result is that the child has no spontaneity, eagerness in him to start something new, has no initiative, has no decision making power in himself and because of this children copy what other children do be it a good or a bad habit. Thus this is not a good style to adopt.

Permissive parenting style: in this style the parents are not much demanding. They have no fixed rules and regulations and allow the child to grow himself. Parents in this case only want their child to love them. More often the mistakes committed by the child are not punished in this case. This allows the child to take decisions himself and help his own growth. But on the contrary because of this style children lack self control and there is a full possibility of child being spoilt.

Neglectful parenting style: in this style the parents are least bothered about their child. They just provide the child with the basic necessities and allow the child to grow himself without any involvement from his or her parents.

Thus these are some of the ways which will help the parents in bringing up their child. Of this the authoritative parenting style is the best one to adopt.
